The Day of the Lord

As Christians, we should all look forward to the Day of the Lord. Some might wonder, “Why does He need to come?” the answer to this lies in the book of Revelation, God’s promise is he is coming. its recorded in old testament and new testament.

Revelation 1:7-8 '“Look, he is coming with the clouds,” and “every eye will see him, even those who pierced him”; and all peoples on earth “will mourn because of him.” So shall it be! Amen. “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” '

He should come to have the following full filled

1) He should come to reveal God’s glory through His wrath.

God’s coming reveals His glory through His wrath. As the Creator and Author of all things, He has the ultimate right to set everything in order and fulfill His Word. All creation exists for Him and through Him, reflecting His sovereignty and purpose.

  • Colossians 1:16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.

  • John 1:3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

  • Revelation 4:11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”

God’s wrath is to reveal his Glory and Majesty

  • Revelation 15:8 'And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power, and no one could enter the temple until the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed.

  • Revelation 6:12-17 'I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place. Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free, hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can withstand it?”'

God’s Wrath vs. Tribulation

  • The tribulation is when people and Satan bring trouble to true believers. Many followers (e.g., All the Disciples of Jesus / Stephen / Paul / Many missionaries in India & World / Many ministers / Churches / Believers ) of Jesus have suffered. God hasn’t promised to keep us away from these hard times, but He gives us the strength to get through them.

  • But when it comes to the wrath of God (Revelation 6:12-17), Believers of Christ will certainly escape from God’s wrath.

  • Wrath of God described in Revelation 6:12-17 and Jesus describing to his disciples Matthew 24:29-33 are same

2) He Should Come to Destroy Satan and His Works

Jesus will return to defeat Satan and end his evil works. Zechariah 14 provides a prophecy about the events of the last day, including a great battle between Heaven and the nations opposing God, known as Armageddon.

  • How the day of Armageddon will be

    • Zechariah 14:1-2 'A day of the Lord is coming, Jerusalem, when your possessions will be plundered and divided up within your very walls. I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it; the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped. Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people will not be taken from the city. '

  • He will descend to the mount of olives to fight the battle, the same mount of olives from which He ascended to heaven

    • Zechariah 14:3-4 'Then the Lord will go out and fight against those nations, as he fights on a day of battle. On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south. '

  • The Lord will come down and destroy the forces of the Antichrist and set up His kingdom on earth.

    • Zechariah 14:5-11 'You will flee by my mountain valley, for it will extend to Azel. You will flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him. On that day there will be neither sunlight nor cold, frosty darkness. It will be a unique day—a day known only to the Lord —with no distinction between day and night. When evening comes, there will be light. On that day living water will flow out from Jerusalem, half of it east to the Dead Sea and half of it west to the Mediterranean Sea, in summer and in winter. The Lord will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one Lord , and his name the only name. The whole land, from Geba to Rimmon, south of Jerusalem, will become like the Arabah. But Jerusalem will be raised up high from the Benjamin Gate to the site of the First Gate, to the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the royal winepresses, and will remain in its place. It will be inhabited; never again will it be destroyed. Jerusalem will be secure.

  • We see four stages in Satan's fall.

    • From the third heaven to the second heaven (Isaiah 14:12-15 'How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, “I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.” But you are brought down to the realm of the dead, to the depths of the pit. ‘)

    • From the second heaven to the earth (Revelation 12:9 'The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. )

    • Just with a single angel God locks Satan into this bottomless pit is referred as Abyss Revelation 20:1-2 'And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. '

    • When he is released, he will be thrown Into the lake of fire thats filled with Burning Sulfur forever Revelation 20:10 'And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever. ‘

  • Like how we followers of christ are promised eternity, Satan is promised of getting - tormented for ever and ever - They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

3) He Should Come to Reveal His Mysteries

Revelation 10:7 'But in the days when the seventh angel is about to sound his trumpet, the mystery of God will be accomplished, just as he announced to his servants the prophets.” ‘

When the seventh trumpet is sounded, the “mystery of God” will be completed. But what is this mystery? In the New Testament, the word “mystery” appears several times, meaning a secret that can only be understood through God’s revelation. It’s not something that can’t be understood at all, but something that only God can reveal.

The mysteries in the New Testament can be summarized into two main categories:

1. The Mystery of Godliness

  • First Part of the Mystery

    • The first part of the mystery is that Jesus Christ came to earth as a human, yet remained pure in spirit. We are called to follow His example and live as He did (1 John 2:6).

    • 1 Timothy 3:16: “Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great: He appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory.”

  • Second Part of the Mystery

    • Ephesians 5:31-32: “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church.”

    • This part of the mystery is that the church is united with Christ as one body. Jesus Christ has a bride, the church, which walks in purity, just as He did.

  • Third Part of the Mystery

    • 1 Corinthians 15:51-53: “Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed—in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet… The perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.”

    • This part of the mystery reveals how believers will be transformed into the likeness of Christ when the last trumpet sounds.

2. The Mystery of Iniquity (Wickedness)

  • 2 Thessalonians 2:7: “For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way.” This refers to the hidden power of lawlessness that is at work in the world, ultimately manifesting in the Antichrist.

  • 2 Thessalonians 2:8-12: “And then the lawless one will be revealed… The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works… and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing.” - This part explains that Satan will work through the Antichrist, using signs and wonders to deceive people. God will allow a strong delusion to lead those who refuse the truth into believing lies.

  • The great lie that Satan told Eve in the Garden of Eden Genesis 3:4-5 '“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” ' , giving roots to false churches on this great lie.

  • The false church, influenced by this lie, claims that sin doesn’t matter, and that believers can live without holiness. This is the mystery of iniquity, and when the seventh trumpet sounds, all these mysteries will be revealed, and the deception of Satan will be made clear to the whole world.

4) He Should come to Judge and Reward all

Revelation 20:12 'And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. '

On the day of judgment, the words spoken by Jesus will come true.

  1. Empty Words Spoken

Matthew 12:36: “But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken.”

    • We may think the careless words you’ve said have been forgotten, but they haven’t. They’ve been recorded in God’s Book of Life to be played back.

    • The words you spoke in anger, bitterness, gossip, and slander are all recorded in God’s Book of Life to be played back.

  2. Secrets of Man

Romans 2:16: “This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.”

    • God will judge the hidden secrets of people. We might think no one knows, but He will judge those secret thoughts from God’s Book of Life

  3. Motives of the Heart

1 Corinthians 4:5: “Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time, each will receive their praise from God.”

  • God will reveal everything that is hidden, including the motives behind our actions.

  • Those who used Christianity for personal gain, like building financial empires in Christ’s name, will be exposed.

  • No one will escape; the dead will be judged according to their deeds. Revelation 20:12

5) He will come to : Create a New Heaven (Eternity) for His Chosen People

Revelation 21:22-27 'I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.'

  • In this new heaven, there will be no physical temple, as the Lord God Almighty and The Lamb will be its temple.

  • The city will not need the sun or moon for light because God’s glory and The Lamb will be its eternal source of light.

  • The light of heaven will be God Himself, providing everything we need.

  • God will be our ultimate source of joy, sufficiency, and fulfilment.

Summary

As believers in Jesus Christ, we must ask ourselves: Are we ready to meet Him? If He were to come right now, would we be prepared? We cannot meet Him if we are not living a holy life or if we are living a double life—chasing the world during the week and acting as Sunday Christians. Instead, we must repent and turn to Him wholeheartedly. He is waiting to welcome us into His eternal home because He desires that no one should perish. As it says in Ezekiel 18:32: “For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent and live!”
