As children, we trust our fathers completely, holding their hands as we walk. As we grow older, we continue to seek their guidance, turning to them for wisdom and reassurance to overcome our fears and anxieties. In the same way, our eternal Father and Savior, Jesus Christ, is always with us. He is Immanuel—“God with us”—and our Redeemer, who saves our souls and gives us salvation.
When we read the book of Colossians, Paul writes to Colossae the role of Christ from Immanuel to Redeemer.
[Colossians 1:15 NIV] 15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
Christ’s greatness is seen everywhere. The first part highlights His role in creation, while the second focuses on His work as our Redeemer.
For any Christian, whether in Colossae or today, who may be unsure about Christ’s role, following six points confirm His supreme authority, which belongs to Him alone—not to any person, angel, or demon.
1) Christ - Creator / Architect
[Colossians 1:16 NIV] 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.
Our Lord is not just the builder of the universe; He is also its designer and owner. Everything was planned in Him, created by Him, and made for Him to reflect His glory.
He owns both Heaven and Earth.
In Heaven, there are visible things like stars, angels, and heavenly armies. On Earth, there are invisible things like the souls of people, air, and unseen elements like gases and scents—all created by God.
Thrones, rulers, and authorities are part of His creation.
Every leader, whether good or bad, whether democratic or authoritarian, all are placed in power by God’s will.
Even Satan was created by God for a purpose. God, as the Creator, could have destroyed him when he rebelled, but instead, He allowed him to serve God’s greater plan. That’s why Scripture says, “All things have been created through Him and for Him.”
Why should we follow God’s will? - Everything God creates has a purpose. Only by following His will can we fulfil our true purpose.
Bible Verses that Confirm that all things were created through him and for him
[Isaiah 44:24 NIV] 24 "This is what the LORD says--your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb: I am the LORD, the Maker of all things, who stretches out the heavens, who spreads out the earth by myself,
[John 1:3 NIV] 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
[Hebrews 1:2 NIV] 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.
2) Christ - Sustainer (He holds everything)
[Colossians 1:17 NIV] 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
The word “He” means “He alone, and no one else.” Among all supernatural powers, Jesus has no rival in ruling over the universe or the church.
Jesus Christ is the Creator and Sustainer of everything—showing that He has complete authority over all creation. He not only made all things but also holds them together and keeps them from falling apart.
Bible Verses that Confirm that he holds everything for us, for his purpose
[Isaiah 43:11 NIV] 11 I, even I, am the LORD, and apart from me there is no savior.
[Isaiah 44:6 NIV] 6 "This is what the LORD says--Israel's King and Redeemer, the LORD Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God.
3) Christ - Head and Body of Church
[Colossians 1:18 NIV] 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.
When we draw close to Christ, we become part of His church. Paul describes the church in Romans 12:4-5, saying that just as a body has many parts with different functions, believers are one body in Christ, each with a unique role.
The Creator and Sustainer of the universe is also the Head of the church.
Our spiritual connection with the Father comes only through Christ.
Just as the human body is the way a person expresses himself, the Body of Christ (the church) is the way Jesus expresses Himself to the world.
Christ leads His church—He inspires, rules, guides, and sustains it. He is the source of its unity and life.
A body cannot live without its head—the same way, a church without Christ is powerless, even if it looks successful outwardly.
Jesus is not just the firstborn; He is the first to rise from the dead through resurrection, proving that death has no power over Him or anything under His rule.
Death could not hold Him. [Acts 2:24 NIV] – “But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.”
Jesus holds supreme authority because of His work on the cross.
That’s why demons tremble before Him. [James 2:19 NIV] – “You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.”
Additional Bible Verses that Confirm that he is the head of Church
[Ephesians 1:22 NIV] 22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church,
[1 Corinthians 11:3 NIV] 3 But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
[Revelation 1:5 NIV] 5 and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood,
4) Fullness of Christ
[Colossians 1:19-20 NIV] 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross and His shed blood brought us many blessings—victory over death, peace, and reconciliation with the Father. Because of this, God gave His fullness to Jesus.
Through Jesus’ work on the cross, we receive His fullness, which is shown in our lives through the fruits of the Spirit.
Additional Bible Verses that Confirm that we have fullness of Christ
[John 1:16 NIV] 16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.
5) Christ the reconciler
[Colossians 1:21-23 NIV] 21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation-- 23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.
We were once separated from God and lived as His enemies because of our sinful ways. Paul reminds us in [Romans 5:10 NIV] “while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son.”
Since we are part of Adam’s fallen race, we are born separated from God. But as we grow, we each choose to continue in that separation through our sinful actions.
We were all rebellious toward God, loving the world and sin, which made us His enemies. That’s why we all needed to be reconciled to Him.
Without God’s intervention, there would be no hope—His wrath and our rebellion had to be removed. Reconciliation could only happen if hostility was taken away, and God made this possible through the death of His Son.
How God Reconciled Us to Himself: [Colossians 1:22 NIV] 22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation
Even though we were once against God, Jesus’ sacrifice made us holy, blameless, and free from guilt so that we could receive God’s grace.
This reconciliation happens through faith—when we truly believe that Jesus is Lord and Savior, our Immanuel, Creator, Builder, Sustainer, and Redeemer.
All fullness comes from Him—He gives us His Holy Spirit, which lives in us and guides us to follow His will.
