Hidden Springs of Inner Life

Updated: Jun 11, 2023

Water is essential for the survival of all living beings. It exists in various forms, such as seawater, spring water, and rivers. However, there is something captivating about spring water, as it sustains life in a unique way. When we closely examine the origins of spring water, a sense of wonder arises. A prime example of this can be witnessed at "Talakaveri," a small spring from which the mighty Cauvery River flows. It's truly amazing to comprehend how this modest spring serves as the starting point for a river that travels two states and nourishes countless towns in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The livelihoods of numerous people depend on the bountiful waters of this remarkable river.

Similar to the purity and vitality of spring water, there exists a spiritual water often referred to as "Living Water" that flows from Jesus. Jesus explains the same in his conversation with a Samaritan woman.

John 4:13-14. (NIV) - 'Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” '

When I read and meditated this verse, God taught me many interesting spiritual things to learn from.

Jesus Says “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again”

  • What does this refer to ? Water which we drink has a lot of “Worldly desires” / “Passions” we have which makes us thirsty, We have the lust to get something again and again even after we achieve something. We get a job, we want a better Job, we get a House, we want a better house, we never settle for what we have and always wants more.

  • Jesus describes this kind of mindset focused on worldly desires by saying, "Whoever drinks this water will be thirsty again.

  • Jesus conveys a fascinating message when he says, "The water I give them will become in them a spring of water." In simpler terms, he suggests that he can create a "Talakaveri" within each of us—a source of water that can transform into spring water. Consider this: you may be someone who constantly desires more and more, but how can you shift from a state of perpetual wanting to becoming a source of abundance, like a spring, that gives back? This is precisely what Jesus is conveying with his words.

  • We look at how to change the water in us to a Spring water source from us

Water from Jesus

Open for all

John 4:14 (NIV) 'but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” '

  • "But whoever" extends an invitation to all individuals, irrespective of their caste, religion, or colour. God's love knows no boundaries and encompasses all people. This message is not exclusive to Christians alone. When Jesus uses the term "whoever," he emphasises that the water he provides is available to everyone without discrimination. It is not restricted to those who already believe. His purpose was not solely to save the spiritually healthy (those who are already in Christ), but to extend salvation to the weak and sinners, offering them hope and redemption. He reaffirms this in Luke 5.

  • Luke 5:31-32 (NIV) ‘Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” '

What is this water

Water manifests in various forms, each with its distinct properties. For instance, we encounter saltwater, hard water, and drinkable spring water. Moreover, the taste and composition of these waters differ due to the varying minerals and nutrients they contain.

Similarly “the water” that Jesus refers here John 4:14 (NIV) 'but whoever drinks the water I give them”, Has many elements to this

  • Faith in Jesus - any one who accepts Jesus as their God, Lord and Savior. The word says without faith you cannot seek God, without Faith in Jesus we cannot get this water. Hebrews 11:6 (NIV) - And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. '

  • Forgiveness of Sins - As inhabitants of this world, our actions and intentions often lead us to commit sins against our fellow human beings. Even the acts we perceive as righteous may be deemed sinful in the eyes of God. Consequently, we find ourselves without the moral standing to approach God and seek forgiveness. However, through Jesus' sacrificial death on the Cross, he bore the weight of our sins and conquered death through the power of the Cross. His selfless act has earned salvation for us, granting us the opportunity to receive forgiveness for our sins. Paul writes on this to his letter to Colossians Colossians 2:13-15 'When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. ' When we ask for forgiveness from our hearts the sin that holds us in bondage is gone by the power of Jesus, We are free from that bondage and it will no longer control on us. If you hear testimonies of people transformation from Drug addition, pornography, alcohol, physical abuse, all these transformation of a person to change from Night to Day happens by the power of the Cross. Romans 6:11,14 - ‘In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace. '

  • Spirit of Baptism - When we are baptised, God gives us a new life in Christ. Our old self is gone, and we receive a fresh start. It's like being clothed with a brand new life. Mark 1:5,8 (NIV) - 'The whole Judaen countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptised by him in the Jordan River. I baptise you with water, but he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit.” ' He credits us with his “Holy Spirit”, its a personal advocate to direct how we should live in the world, what we should watch for how we should avoid the sins of the world and live a godly life. The holy spirit stays with us 24X7 till we reach eternity. John 14:26 - ‘But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. '

  • Child of God - Once we receive the Holy Spirit and baptism, we earn the tag of “Child of God”, When we earn this we are separated from the world and no longer in the control of worldly things, we become the heirs of God Galatians 4:6-7 (NIV) - 'Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “ Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir. ' Once we are Child of God, he blesses us with many spiritual gifts as blessing thru Jesus. Each of this gift varies according to God’s plan. 1 Corinthians 12:6 (NIV) - 'There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. ' 1 Corinthians 12:8-11 (NIV) - 'To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines. '

Water to a “Spring of Water”

We understood what this water is from Jesus, what attributes does this water have. Now lets look at the way how God turns each of a “Talakaveri” so that we become a Spring of water

John 4:14 (NIV) 'but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” '

  • Just like we can't understand where the water in a spring comes from, when we are born again in Christ, we change completely. The light of Christ shines in us, driving away darkness and transforming us. Our old ways are gone, as Paul says. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV) - 'Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! '

  • When we let Jesus' light shine in our lives, we start walking with him. We seek his guidance in everything and surrender all aspects of our lives to him. As our intimacy with him grows, we become separate from the world and our actions become a shining example. We no longer rely on ourselves, but on the Holy Spirit to direct our steps and show us how to live. 1 John 1:7 (NIV) - 'But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. '

  • Our behaviour / our actions to others will become a spring of water - our attitude to the world will turn from “getting more” to “Giving more”

  • Our life will emulate the behaviours of Christ, He have himself to the world, He chose the lowest things of the world, he did not do anything for him, but for others. Same attitude will flow in us as well

  • “Spring of Water” - This will come from Jesus, there will be a burden to Pray more for Lost souls, Pray for healing Sick people, Help the needy, Comfort people who are in need etc.. This will be guided by the Holy Spirit. We never know how it comes but God will give the burden, he will lead you and he will provide the provisions to make a way.. You have to experience this, once you get to this experience the joy of Spring will make you do more and more. All the troubles / trials will be worthless on what God works in his ways..

  • You receive a peace - God will give a Peace, when the world seeks to get more, you will be giving from what you have but you will have Peace on what you have (Worldly & Spiritually), The peace that we receive from Father gives us the peace when we do according to his desire - John 14:27 (NIV) ‘Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. '

    • No trials and temptations will deter you down with this peace

    • As this peace is aligned to the “eternal life”

    • All the things of the world many not matter the most, what matters is you walking / aligning to the ways of Christ

  • Promises to take care - As we turn in to spiring water, God gives us every day with many promises to strength us and make us bold to do his work Deuteronomy 31:6 (NIV) “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you or forsake you”

    • We will have trials / challenges in the world but he will give a way out - the trials and challenges are not to make our life miserable but to learn to trust in God / Improve our spiritual maturity.

    • He will take care of our needs here at earth while we are a “Spring of Water” for him - he knows what we need and will never make us poor Proverbs 11:24-25 (NIV) 'One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. '

  • Credit us with his Righteousness / Fruits of spirit - As we turn and do the work of “Spring of Water”, He will credit us with the righteousness of christ which will be a blessing to others. Think of “Talakaveri” becoming a Cauvery to cater two states. Like wise with his fruits of Spirit we turn to be a blessing for others. Galatians 5:22-24 (NIV) 'But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. '

So the action is in us, 1st step is to receive the water from him and turn the water to a “Spring of water” in us. its a journey, it starts today with a simple prayer to Accept Jesus as your saviour and God. Then he will lead the rest.
